Bong Maintenance: Cleaning and Care Guide
A dirty bong changes the taste, smells bad, and makes smoking unpleasant. If you clean it regularly, your bong will last long and taste great every time. This guide walks you through cleaning step by step.
Why You Need to Clean Your Bong
Resin builds up inside the bong, changing the taste and making hits harsh. If left too long, the buildup hardens and becomes much harder to clean. We recommend cleaning once a week.
What You Need
- Isopropyl alcohol 90%
- Coarse salt
- Small bottle brush
- Zip bags
- Warm water
Step 1 — Disassemble
Remove the downstem, bowl, and any caps. Separate all pieces so you can clean each one thoroughly.

Step 2 — Soak in Alcohol + Salt
Pour coarse salt into the bong, add 90% isopropyl alcohol. Cover the holes and shake for 30 seconds. Let it sit for 30 minutes. The salt acts as an abrasive, the alcohol dissolves the resin.

Step 3 — Brush and Rinse
Use the brush to scrub areas with heavy buildup. Rinse with warm water until the alcohol smell is gone.
Step 4 — Air Dry
Stand the bong so water drains out completely. Air dry for 30 minutes. Don’t use a cloth inside — lint will stick to the glass.

Tips for Long-Lasting Bongs
- Clean once a week if you use it frequently
- Don’t leave standing water in the bong — change water every session
- Store in a safe place, away from table edges
- For stubborn buildup, soak overnight in alcohol

Once a week if you use it frequently. If you use it occasionally, once a month is fine.
What cleaning solutions can I use?
Isopropyl alcohol 90% + coarse salt works best. Don’t use household cleaners — they leave residue and smell.
Are glass bongs fragile?
Borosilicate glass is durable and heat-resistant, but it will break if dropped. Handle with care.
